Control of reproduction through surgical sterilization is the most effective way to overcome the problem of unwanted animals and also help their overall health. This is best done before or just as they reach sexual maturity which is between 5-6 months of age. The process of recovery after sterilization only takes about 2-3 days.
In addition to reducing the number of unwanted puppies and kittens, sterilization has other benefits:
Spayed females do not come into season and so do not call to attract male cats. They are no longer at risk of uterine, ovarian infections or cancers. Neutered (castrated) males become more docile and affectionate; their urine loses its strong tomcat smell and they spray urine less; they roam less and are not so vulnerable to road accidents; they fight less and are therefore less likely to become infected with contagious diseases or develop abscesses through bite wounds.
In 6 years, a pair of cats and their ofsprings can produce 420,000 cats.
Spayed female dogs will not come into season and attract male dogs. Neutering male dogs also has many benefits, one of the most important being a decreased aggression, especially if it is done before one year of age. Decreased roaming – when they sense a female in heat – and increased concentration – when you are training your dog – are two other behavioral advantages of castrating male dogs. Medical advantages are numerous, among which fewer tumors, fewer hernias and improved genetics in the long run.
Cost of Spaying/Neutering
Spaying/neutering is purposely low-cost for all locals from Langkawi, so as to break the popular belief that an animal will not be healthy once it has been spayed/neutered. Regular campaigns are being held every year so as to bring in as many cats in need of spaying/neutering as possible to the clinic over a few days.
